What is a Dean's Certification?

A dean's certification (also called a "dean's letter" or "good standing letter") is a formal document from your current law school's dean of students, dean of academics, or registrar's office that certifies:

✓ Your enrollment status and expected graduation date
✓ Your academic good standing
✓ Any academic discipline or honor code issues (or the absence thereof)
✓ Your class rank or GPA (some versions)
✓ Your anticipated completion of required 1L coursework

Most T14 schools require this document as part of the transfer application. Request it 4–6 weeks before your earliest deadline.

Timing Tips:
  • Request your dean's cert 4–6 weeks before your earliest deadline
  • If applying to multiple schools, request one general version or specify all target schools
  • Some schools charge $15–$50 per certification letter — budget accordingly
  • Follow up politely after 2 weeks if you haven't heard back
  • Ask if the school sends it directly to transfer schools or gives it to you to submit
Applying to multiple schools? You can request one letter that lists all your target schools, or ask if your school can issue a general "To Whom It May Concern" version you can submit to all schools.
